A License definition is a metadata description of the Salesforce features and services available to your organization.

License definitions describe functionality for your org as a whole and individual users in your org.

Within each edition, you also have some different licenses that give access to specific features and functionality. You can view the licenses available to your company and purchase fresh licenses by clicking Setup -> Administration Setup -> Company Profile -> Company Information.

 

Salesforce.com provides some user Salesforce licenses which are available for an org can be viewed on the Company Information page. Several salesforce licenses are provided including:

 

  • Salesforce
  • Salesforce Platform
  • Lightning Platform:

  • Knowledge only User
  • Guest User
  • Customer Portal Manager Standard
  • Customer Portal Manager Custom
  • High Volume Customer Portal User
  • Content Only User
  • Chatter Only
  • Chatter Free License
  • Chatter External

 

Salesforce

This is the most commonly purchased license and entitles users to full access to all standard CRM functionality, standard applications, custom applications, and AppExchange apps.

Salesforce Platform

Salesforce platform license is for users who need to access custom or AppExchange apps but not standard CRM functionality. These users have access to core platform functionality such as accounts, contacts, custom tabs, documents, reports and dashboards, and documents but are restricted in other ways. They don’t have access to opportunities or forecasts and are not entitled to some user permissions and Standard apps.

Lightning Platform

This license type is for those users who only want to have access to custom or AppExchange App without the standard CRM functionalities. With the license, the users can access the core platform functionalities, e.g: Accounts, contacts, dashboards, reports, and documents. Users can also access the custom apps deployed in the organization or installed from Salesforce AppExchange.

Salesforce Platform Light

 

The lightning platform is designed for those users who require to access one custom app but don’t need the standard CRM functionality. It provides the same features authorization as the salesforce platform user, but additionally, they have access to an unlimited number of custom tabs. This license user can only access the one custom app specified up to ten custom objects.

Force.comOne App

Is for users who need access to a single custom application but not standard CRM functionality. These users have the same rights as Salesforce Platform users (plus the unlimited number of custom tabs) but are limited to a single custom application consisting of up to 10 custom objects and have only read-only access to accounts and contacts.

Force.com – Free

Force.com Free Salesforce license is for users who need access to a single custom application but not standard CRM functionality. It is essentially the same rights as Force.com – One App users, but they do not have access to accounts and contacts.

Knowledge Only User

Its name suggests the license is designed for the User who only requires access to the salesforce knowledge app.

This license includes authorization of different tabs, such as Articles, Article Management, Home, Reports, Chatter, Files, Profile, Custom objects, and custom tabs. It also includes the knowledge-only profiles that provide access to the Article Tabs using the “View Article” user permission.

Content Only User

The content-only user license is available for the users who want to access the salesforce CRM Content only. It also includes access to the below tabs:

  • Workspaces
  • Content
  • Subscriptions
  • Ideas and Home.

Ideas and Answers Internal User Salesforce

licenses are for internal salesforce.com users who only require access to the Answers and Ideas features. The license allows users to access the Home tab, Answers tab, Ideas tab, and up to three other custom tabs.

Guest User

Guest User Salesforce Licenses are essentially for a Force.com Site which allows you to create one active Force.com Site for each Guest User license in your Org. Site visitors have access to any information made available in an active public site but can be restricted by object and read/write privileges.

The edition determines the Number of Guest User Licenses and you cannot purchase Additional Licenses.

Customer Portal Manager Standard 

Customer Portal manager standard Salesforce licenses are for Contacts that access your customer support information by logging into your Customer Portal.

These users can view and edit data owned by them or users below them in the Customer Portal role hierarchy. They also can view and edit cases in which they are involved access custom objects based upon their profile and receive the Portal Super User permission.

Customer Portal Manager Custom

An extension of the Custom Portal Manager Standard Salesforce license, this license also allows users to run reports based on their profile settings and receive the “Delegated Portal User Administrator” permission.
Partner portal users can also have the following two user licenses entitling them to additional features.

  • Silver Partner: Silver Partner Salesforce Licenses entitle the user to access Salesforce CRM Content (based up feature license and profile), 2 MB of data storage, and access to the documents tab, approvals, and My Account Profile.
  • Gold Partner: Gold Partner Salesforce Licenses entitle the user to access Salesforce CRM Content (based up feature license and profile), 5 MB of data storage, and access to accounts, leads, opportunities, cases, custom objects, documents tab, approvals, and My Account Profile.

Chatter High Volume Customer Portal User

This license is designed for contacts who need access to customer support information in your Org. These users don’t have roles, don’t appear in the role hierarchy, and can only access specific records based upon specific criteria. These users can access accounts, assets, cases, contacts, custom objects, documents, ideas, and questions depending on their profile settings.

Chatter Only

Salesforce.com recently announced a Chatter license for users who typically do not access Salesforce CRM but need to collaborate with other users via Chatter. The license is $15/user/month and allows the user to access profiles, status updates, people directories, real-time feeds, file sharing/content, groups, ideas, contacts, accounts, dashboards, reports, 1 custom app, and up to 10 custom objects.

Chatter Free

The Chatter Free license is for users who don’t have Salesforce licenses but must have access to Chatter. These users can access standard Chatter items such as people, profiles, groups, and files, but they can’t access any Salesforce objects or data. Chatter Free users can also be Chatter moderators.

Chatter Free users don’t see tabs like other Salesforce users. Chatter Free users access feeds, people, groups, and files using the App Launcher in Lightning Experience. In Salesforce Classic, users access these features from links in the page sidebar.

Salesforce administrators can upgrade a Chatter Free license to a standard Salesforce or Lightning Platform Starter license at any time. You can’t convert a standard Salesforce, Lightning Platform Starter, or Chatter Only license to a Chatter Free license

Chatter External

This license is for users who are outside of your company’s email domain. These external users, also called customers, can be invited to Chatter groups that allow customers. Customers can access information and interact with users only in the groups they’re invited to. They have no access to Chatter objects or data. Chatter External users can view user profiles, but they can’t edit them.
