What is the difference between Salesforce Change Sets and DevOps Center?

Salesforce change sets are still being used for deployments. So, now is the time to think about how much longer you can endure. The DevOps workflow is shifting away from source-driven, manual processes. In addition, UI-based tools have made Salesforce DevOps accessible to both admins and developers.

How will DevOps Center replace Change Sets?

In the long term, DevOps Center won’t just be an alternative to change sets. That’s because DevOps itself is such an enormous improvement on old workflows using change sets. Even if DevOps Center began life as a tool for teams transitioning to mature DevOps, it will easily win out over change sets.

While there are several serious limitations with change sets, there are two main ways in which DevOps Center is vastly superior.

  1. Controlling Versions

Salesforce teams can’t scale their change sets as they grow. As developers and admins work together, they find they often tread on one another’s toes all too easily, which wastes hours on deployments.
In the process, they accidentally overwrite each other’s changes and block each other’s deployments.

The solution to this problem is version control, which is a key element of DevOps. By using version control, teams avoid having conflicts between teammates’ work ruin their releases.

  1. Keeping track of your release pipeline

Visibility is another weakness of change sets.
The process of building an outbound change set can be confusing, and it is not always clear why an inbound change set failed to deploy successfully. Also, if you’re using a change set and want to track work as it moves along your pipeline, you have to do it manually.

The use of DevOps tooling makes this process more manageable and scalable than a simple org-to-org setup. Even though the number of environments and deployments has increased, workloads have been reduced by automation. The DevOps Center allows you to track work items more easily than change sets, which can make this release pipeline more transparent.

The Future of Salesforce Development

Salesforce’s development and release models are changing, and workflows that rely on change sets are falling behind. Salesforce is also evolving as a result of this shift. In recent years, Salesforce has grown into an incredibly powerful platform, which today is driving an increase in customizing it.

Salesforce development is undoubtedly headed towards DevOps. The adoption of DevOps is already widespread, and the benefits are reaped by Salesforce teams:

↪ The seamless collaboration of developers and administrators;

↪ Deployments are faster, allowing you to focus on other tasks;

↪ Reducing the number of bugs and errors in releases;

↪ The ability to roll back iterative releases;

↪ End users are able to provide feedback earlier with faster release cadences.
